A few drops of oils like spruce, lavender, fir, juniper, rosewood, wintergreen/birch, cedarwood and juniper can also be added to the rinse cycle.

Use a dampened wash cloth with 10 drops of lavender, bergamot, lemon, or melaleuca instead of a softening agent in the dryer.

Add Essential Oils to Your Drinking Water

Add Essential Oils to Your Drinking Water

I like to add essential oils to my drinking water. I add lemon water to my drinking water first thing in the morning since it is said to counteract acidity and make the stomach more alkaline. Lemon is also a powerful antibacterial and it stimulates the action of the white blood corpuscles. It also tonic for supporting the nervous and sympathetic nervous system and it also has a tonic effect on the circulatory system.

When it is hot outside I add peppermint essential oils since it is said to cool the body down. Peppermint is also one of the most effective oils for the digestive system. It is best to dip a toothpick into the bottle of peppermint and then swirl around in the water.

Other oils I add to my drinking water are grapefruit, tangerine and orange. They are powerful antioxidants due to the d-limonene content.

Try to add some essential oils to drinking water but make sure that the oils you use are listed as dietary supplements. It is important that the company you buy the essential oils from list their oils as suitable for ingestion. Ask me if you want to know more the oils I use from Young Living.

The Aroma of an Essential Oils is Powerful

The Aroma of an Essential Oils is Powerful

The Aroma is Powerful

The aroma of an essential oil is very powerful. In order for an aroma to be detected, it has to be volatile so it can be carried by the air to the 10 million sensory neurons located in the nostrils. It finally ends up in the limbic system of the brain, where it is perceived and analyzed. The limbic system is the main relay station. It is there that all the emotional responses are located. The frontal lobes of the limbic system control the memory and attention, and it also senses the emotional responses. After the information about the scent has been perceived and analyzed of the limbic system, it is sent to other parts of the brain and then to storage in the memory. The sense of smell connects emotions with memories and integrates mind and body.

The aroma from a special fragrance can evoke emotions and memories before we are aware of it.

The limbic lobe can also activate the hypothalamus, which is considered one of the most important parts of the brain. It acts as the hormonal control center and it releases chemical messengers which can affect things like the energy level. Sex hormones, thyroid hormones, growth hormones, and neurotransmitters are governed by the hypothalamus. The hypothalamus is referred to as the "master gland".

So,through the essential oils' molecular structure and fragrance, they can influence the limbic lobe and hypothalamus. Inhalation of essential oils can combat stress and emotional trauma, and also stimulate production of hormones from the hypothalamus.

As you can see, essential oils have a very powerful influence on both  body and mind.

Getting Started With Essential Oils

Getting Started With Essential Oils

It can be confusing when you are new to essential oils. They can be used in many different ways and each essential oil has many therapeutic properties. I put together some links to pages that I think are useful for a beginner.

Safety
Essential oils are safe to use as long as you follow the recommended dosage and research the contraindications before you use them. Some oils are contraindicated in certain conditions and others should not be applied prior to sun exposure. People with allergies should perform a skin patch test. A skin patch test is also recommended for children and when you use oils that may cause skin sensitivity. Pregnant women should consult a health care professional when starting any type of heath program

Administration & Dilution
There are many advantages of using essential oils. One advantage is the many ways essential oils can be administered in. The two most popular methods of administration are topical application and inhalation. When applied topically and inhaled the essential oils are almost immediately absorbed into the bloodstream. Inhaled oils don't have to go through the digestive system to enter the blood stream.

Essential Oils for First Aid
It is always best to be prepared before something happens. Essential oils have anti-fungal, anti-viral, antibacterial, pain relieving, and decongestant properties. Some oils have traditionally been used for wound healing and burns as well. For example, Lavender is an excellent oil to keep in your first aid kit. It is a very versatile oil and gentle enough to use neat, or undiluted in children. It is antiseptic and is be helpful in flu, wounds, catarrh, cystitis, colds and coughs.

Even More Ways to Use Essential Oils

Even More Ways to Use Essential Oils

Topical application and inhalation are the most common ways of using essential oils. There are  other ways to incorporate essential oils into your life than just applying them on the body or inhaling the oils.

Here are some more tips so you quickly can get into the habit of using the essential oils in your daily life.

Cleaning and disinfecting
Add a few drops of oil to the dishwasher to help disinfect and purify. Essential oils can also be added to the sponge or the cloth for extra freshness. Common oils to use are fir, lavender, Melaleuca Alternifolia, pine, spruce, bergamot, orange and lemon.

Dishwashing Soap
Add several drops of essential oils like orange, tangerine, pine, lemon, and peppermint to a bottle of liquid soap. Use un-scented or natural soap if possible. Liquid castile soap can be used too.

Laundry
You can add essential oils to enhance the cleanliness and fragrance of the laundry. Recent research shows that eucalyptus oils kills dust mites. Add 25 drops of eucalyptus oil to each load for an effective dust mite control. You can also add 1 tablespoon to a bottle of liquid laundry detergent.

Carpets and floors
Make your own non-toxic aromatic and  cleaning products for the carpet and floors.

Non-carpet floors
Add 1/4 cup of white vinegar to a bucket of water.
Add 5-10 drops of pine, spruce, melaleuca, or lemon.
Add several drops of dishwashing soap if the floor is especially dirty.

Carpet floors
Add 16-20 drops of essential oils
1 cup of baking soda
Mix well and put in a covered container overnight. Sprinkle over the carpet and then vaccum the powder.

Room deodorizer
Make a room spray to deodorize, freshen, and disinfect the bathrooms, work areas, sinks, tiles, woodwork, carpets, cupboards etc.

Mix:
Rosemary CT cineol 2 drops
Lemon 4 drops
Eucalyptus globulus 3 drops
Lavender 4 drops
1 cup of water

Add it to a spray bottle and shake well since essential oils separate easily from water.

Spiders, fleas, dust mites, ticks, ants and more
Repel these nasty little bugs with natural essential oils instead of with toxic chemicals.

Peppermint, lemon, lavender Eucalyptus globulus, citronella, basil, thyme, cinnamon, cypress, and lemongrass are insect repellents.

For moth repellents for your linens and woolens use essential oils like citronella, lemongrass, lavender instead of toxic moth balls. Rosemary and Red Cedar may also be effective. Make a sachet by placing essential oil drops on a cotton ball. Wrap and tie this in a small handkerchief or similar. Hang in storage areas or add to the linens.

The sachet can also be put in the drawers. Switch out the essential oils for something pleasing like lavender or rose.
Roman chamomile is very soothing and relaxing for children's sleepwear. Add a scented cotton ball to an envelop to scent stationary.

The post the Chistmas Essential Oils provides some tips on how you can use essential oils during the holidays.

Hot Tubs and Saunas
Jacuzzis, saunas and hot tubs are favorite spots for germs. You can disinfect the water using essential oils like cinnamon, lavender, clove, lemon, thyme, grapefruit or Eucalyptus globulus. Use 3 drops per person.

Add several drops of thyme, pine, rosemary or lavender to a spray bottle with water and spray down the surfaces in the sauna. You can also use scented water to splash down the hot sauna stones.
Some oils may damage plastic sauna/spa filters or hoses.

Painting
Add 1 teaspoon of your favorite essential oil to one gallon of paint. Mix well. The oil will counteract the unpleasant smell of the paint. The essential oils ware not fatty oils so there is no need to worry about leaving spots on the wall.

The French, German, and English Way of Using Essential Oils

The French, German, and English Way of Using Essential Oils

There are three different models of using essential oils therapeutically: the French, German, and English. Together these three models show how powerful and versatile essential oils can be. The best results may be achieved if all three are combined and used with touch therapy, lymphatic massage, spinal touch, Vita Flex, and Raindrop technique.

The French Way
The French model prescribes the ingestion and neat (undiluted) topical application of therapeutic essential oils. A few essential oils are often added to a teaspoon of honey, a piece of bread, or a small amount of vegetable oil.

The German Way

The German way focuses on inhalation of the essential oils. According to research, the effect of aromatic compounds on the sense of smell can exert strong effects on the brain, especially on the hypothalamus and the limbic system. The limbic system is the seat of emotions and the hypothalamus is the hormone command center of the body. Essential oils high in sequiterpenes, such as sandalwood, cedarwood, myrrh, frankincense, vetiver, and melissa can dramatically increase oxygenation and activity in the brain. This may directly improve many systems of the body.

The English Way

The English way focuses on diluting a small amount of essential oils in a vegetable oil and massaging the body for relaxing and relieving stress.

Is it possible to rely on one way only?

I found that the combination of all three models work the best. However, I don't recommend to ingest any oils unless you are using essential oils that are therapeutic grade. Make sure the oils you are using are from a company that says their oils can be used as dietary supplements. It is important that they meet or exceed the AFNOR standard before ingestion as well.

Inhalation works best if the goal is to balance mood and emotions, induce weight loss, and increase growth hormone secretions. Peppermint, lavender, vetiver, sandalwood and white fir oils are effective for inhalation.

Topical application would produce a better result in the case of spinal or muscle injuries. I use essential oils often on my son who is a football player. According to Young, marjoram is excellent for muscles, lemongrass for ligaments, and wintergreen or birch for bones.

Taken a drop of peppermint orally for indigestion may be very effective, but it doesn't mean that peppermint cannot produce the same results when massaged on the stomach. In some cases, all three methods are interchangeable and may produce similar benefits.

The most common methods

The most common methods of essential oils application are probably cold air diffusing and undiluted (neat) topical application. Other ways of applications include adding the essential oils to the reflexology, Vita Flex, and acupressure points. Adding essentials to these disciplines increase the healing response that cannot be achieved with reflexology or acupressure alone.

So, you have to try and see what method suits your needs the best.
