Massage is considered one of the most effective ways of administer essential oils, The essential oils are absorbed through the skin into the bloodstream, and the therapeutic properties of the essential oils will reach different parts of the body. The essential oils have powerful therapeutic properties that will enhance the healing effects of the massage. The benefits of massage are many and, with the right choice of essential oils, the healing is enormous. The muscles, nerves, and the lymphatic system all benefit from massage.
The only way lymph moves around is with the help of muscular contraction and relaxation, Massage will increase those functions so the movement of lymph is encouraged. Oils like peppermint, juniper berry, rosemary, orange and grapefruit are said to stimulate the circulation of the lymph and tissue fluids. The circulation of blood is also increased during massage, and the amount of blood cells is increased. The blood flows three times faster than normal during massage, and the work required by the heart is reduced.
The main function of the lymphatic system is to drain the excessive fluid from the tissues and the cells, help fighting infections, and distribute fat soluble nutrients. Juniper Berry essential oil is a powerful diuretic, and can therefore enhance the healing of massage in conditions such as fluid retention, by increasing the flow or urine. All essential oils with diuretic properties will assist in increasing the detoxification process in the body.
The skin may become firmer, more elastic, and softer by massage since the circulation to the skin is enhanced. The increased circulation of the blood stimulates the nerve supply to the muscles, and therefore the muscle tone is improved. Black Pepper is a circulatory stimulant that will increase circulation, and assist in improving the muscle tone.
Massage can also be used to relieve pain, encourage relaxation and assist in elimination of toxins. Essential oils with analgesic properties like black pepper ( Piper nigrum), bay (Laurus nobilis) and cajuput (Melaleuca leucadendron) are excellent choices in conditions of aches and pain.
Massage is beneficial to the nervous system and it can be either sedating or uplifting. Bergamot (Citrus aurantium var, bergamia) and basil (Ocimum basilicum) are essential oils with with affinity with the nervous system, Bergamot is a relaxant nervine, and beneficial in relieving tension in the body. Basil is a stimulant nervine and will stimulate the body. Nervines strengthen the body.
You can make massage oil blends and rub on your own skin, it doesn't have to be done by a professional massage therapist. You might not get the whole body massage, but it is still beneficial. I like to add essential oils to massage oil and use it instead of body lotion after the shower, or to put on aching joints or muscles.
Please remember it is not advisable to massage in conditions such as inflamed or swollen joints, fractures, hemorrhages, inflammation, inflamed veins, or cancer.
I like to gently put on a massage oil blend in situations where my son has sprained his ankle, or is in pain from playing football.
I recommend that you always perform a skin patch test when you try a new oil.

My Favorite Macerated Oils
Infused oils of Calendula (Calendula officinalis) and St.John Wort (Hypericum perforatum) are among my favorites. They can be used as stand alone oils or blended together.
Calendula is a useful medicinal, culinary and cosmetic herb. Keep it in the first aid kit. It can be used as a cleansing, soothing wash for cuts and grazes and will help prevent infection.
It is important to remember not to use calendula when an infection is already present, as it can stimulate tissue growth, healing over a wound and encourage the infection to internalize. If an infection is present it is best to use St. John Wort or a mixture of both.
Infused oils are prepared by heating base oil and herbs together. Base oils have active constituents, which will enhance the massage, so it is important to know which base oil to use. Infused oils can be used instead of plain in massage oils to enhance the healing benefits.
Dried herb: ½ oz.
Fresh herb: 1oz.
Put the herbs in a jar with a tight fitting-lid and pour the oil over them. Make sure the herbs are completely covered. Add one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar or white wine to help break down the plant material. Leave the jar to sit in the sun all day and in a warm cabinet at night for two weeks. Strain through 4 layers of unbleached cotton cheese cloth or muslin. This can be repeated two to three times to make a stronger oil. The final product should be strong enough to leave an aroma when massaged on the skin,
Crock pot Method
Base oil: 1 cup
Dried herb: ½ oz.
Fresh herb: 1oz.
Place the herbs and oil in a crockpot and leave on low heat for two hours. Follow the directions for the solar method for straining.
Waterbath Metod
Base oil: 1 cup
Dried herb: ½ oz.
Fresh herb: 1oz.
Pour the oil over the herbs in a stainless steel bowl. Heat over water bath (a sauce pan one-quarter filled with water), or a double boiler, which should be simmering. The bowl needs to be floating in the water. Keep the lid on the oil and stir occasionally. Simmer for 30 minutes and make sure it doesn’t get too hot. It should not smoke or bubble.

Administering Essential Oils
There are many advantages of using essential oils. One advantage is the many ways essential oils can be administered in. The two most popular methods of administration are topical application and inhalation. When applied topically and inhaled the essential oils are almost immediately absorbed into the bloodstream. Inhaled oils don't have to go through the digestive system to enter the blood stream.
When oils are applied topically the skin's own sebum helps the oils to enter the bloodstream, or they may be absorbed by the lymph and intestitial fluids. Two examples of topical applications are with compress or aromatic massage. In either case, a skin patch test should be conducted before the oils are applied on the skin.
Aromatic compresses are essentially essential oils mixed with water and applied to the skin with a strip of gauze or a piece of flannel. Compresses can be hot or cold. Hot compresses are made with water that is as hot as can be tolerated. The hot compress is used to reduce muscular and rheumatic pain. It can also be used to draw out boils and splinters. Cold compresses are made with ice water. It's uses include treating sprains, swelling, fever, and relieve stress. Both methods are very effective.
From a holistic point of view, aromatic massage is a good way of administering essential oils. Massage is another example of a topical skin application. Already mention above when oils are applied to the skin they absorb quickly into the body. A typical massage blend would be 15-30 drops of essential oils to 50 ml carrier oil. It would be 1-3% dilution of the essential oil and for a whole body massage you want to dilute the oils more. For a local massage a 4% dilution is normally recommended.
The oils used in aromatherapy massage should be cold pressed vegetable oils, like jojoba, Simmondsia chinensis, avocado, Persea Americana, Sweet almond, Prunus amygdalus, apricot kernel, Prunus armeniaca, and safflower, Carthamus tinctorius.
Mineral oils would stop the essential oils to enter the body. 5% wheat germ oil, Triticum durum, Triticum aestivum will keep the massage oil blend from oxidizing.
Aromatherapy massage is very gentle and relaxing. It is very healing and can be used for relaxing purposes, encourage blood circulation, and help with lymph flow. The massage is also useful in easing aches and pain. Massage will also help in eliminating toxins and toning the body.
Inhalation is a very popular method of administering essential oils. The volatile molecules of the oil are absorbed via the mucous membranes into the bloodstream, sine if the molecules will enter the blood through the lungs via the air sacs. Some of the conditions that can benefit from inhalation is; respiratory tract problems, throat infections, tensions, anxiety, coughs, headaches and depression.
Steam inhalation is a very effective in treating respiratory problems such as coughs, sore throat, colds and sinusitis. Fill a medium -sized bowl with boiling water and add 6 drops and inhale for about 5-10 minutes. Steam inhalation can be contraindicated in asthma since the steam can make the condition worse.
Another way to administer oils is to disperse them in the air as a fine mist. This method is known as Aerosol Air Dispersion. Absorption through the respiratory system is one of the most effective means of absorbing the oil in the body. This is because nearly 21 liters of blood per minute can be regenerated in the lungs. Inhalation in this manner can be effective means of revitalizing, oxygenating, and detoxifying.
Before administering of the essential oil it is advisable to to always consider what is suitable for each person. I always recommend to follow appropriate dosage and to research contraindication of the essential oils before administration. To fully enjoy the benefits of the properties of the essential oils they need to be applied properly.
