In order to achieve true healing of the body the relationship between the body, mind and spirit needs to be in balance.

Dr. Bach believed that the mind shows the first sign of a disease more definitely than the body, so he decided to use the mind as a guide when he prescribed his remedies. The best way to treat a disease is to find a remedy that corresponds with the temperament of the client. He thought that the body is more perceptive to develop disease if there is a disharmony to be found.

The disharmony exists when people are not feeling mentally well and suffer from exhaustion, fear, and mental torture. He believed that the state of mind and disturbing moods are the true cause of disease since they prevent us from being happy. Unhappiness lowers the body's vitality and makes us less resistant to disease. Dr. Bach decided to create his remedies based on 12 different states of minds. He created 38 remedies to correspond with the different states of minds, and he used them to match the temperament of his clients when treating them.

In natural healing both the psychological and physiological effects are considered, and several remedies are used synergistically to complement each other for a greater effect. Aromatherapy should not be seen as a stand alone therapy, but more as a part of a holistic healing wheel.

Essential oils are excellent complements to Flower essences because of their effect on the nervous system. Inhaled essential oils have an almost instant effect on our emotions. The aroma molecules are absorbed through the nasal passage and transferred to the olfactory epithelium, there the molecules bind with an odor-binding protein. Nerve impulses send information to the olfactory bulbs located in the limbic system, to be analyzed without having to be transferred to other parts of the brain. The limbic system is considered the oldest part of the brain, and where the emotional responses are. The hypothalamus, that is part of the limbic system, may also be activated. This will influence all the glands in the body. The hypothalamus is the center for basic drives and emotions. By sending signals to various glands different emotional and physiological responses may occur.

The essential oils may assist in keeping our moods in balance since their nervine properties so easily reach the brain and triggers emotions. Essential oils can also be chosen to suit the temperament of the client in order to address the disease as the flower remedies do.

So, essential oils complement flower remedies since they influence the mind and the emotions, and help maintain normal happiness.
