What's Your PMS Type?

What's Your PMS Type?

I think most women have experienced PMS at some stage during their life. When I was younger I felt horrible days before my period. Fortunately, I haven't had any problems  since I started taking care of my body holistically.

PMS is mostly connected to toxicity, nutritional imbalances, and hormonal imbalance. A poor diet and nutritional deficiencies are the primarily causes of PMS. When your diet is high in sugar, white flour, corn syrup, and caffeine the chances are higher that you suffer from PMS. I noticed a significant difference when I removed all the refined white products and processed foods in favor of a diet high in vegetables, especially green leafy vegetables, and  good sources of protein. It is important to avoid synthetic estrogens in food and aim for organic dairy and meat. Good fats are important so experts suggest to increase your amount of omega oils, and especially Evening Primrose Oil which has proven helpful for many women.

According to Dr. Henry Bieler, in his book, Food Is Your Best Medicine, PMS means that the digestive tract and liver have become irritated from a poor diet, and as a result the toxins are entering the blood stream

PMS has been divided into different groups according to the symptoms and hormonal patterns. It is possible for a woman to suffer from all four types in one cycle, and only suffer from one in the next cycle. So, what type are you?

The different PMS types:

PMS-A (anxiety)
This group is associated with anxiety and symptoms include nervous tension, mood swings, anxiety, and irritability. This group biochemically shows a high estrogen to progesterone ratio. This could be related to congestion in the liver, and excess milk and animal fats. Steven Horne suggests that using liver cleansing herbs to clear congestion and progesterone cream may be helpful. Steven Horne also says magnesium, B6, and  GLA, (Gamma-linolenic acid) may be helpful as well. GLA can be found in plant based oils such as borage seed oil, evening primrose oil and black currant seed oil.

PMS-C (craving)
This group shows an increased appetite and food cravings, especially for sugar and chocolate. Some of the symptoms are dizziness, fainting, fatigue, and heart palpitations. This is linked with hypoglycemia and low prostaglandins. Remedies for hypoglycemia may be helpful, and Horne recommends Licorice root, and AlgaeCravings for chocolate may be caused by magnesium deficiency and essential fatty acid deficiencies. He also says zinc and B6 are other supplements that may help.

PMS-D (depression)
Depression, forgetfulness, crying, confusion, and insomnia are some of the characteristics of this group. According to Steven Horne, this is related to high progesterone and low estrogen, and magnesium  levels seem to be low in this group as well. Heavy metal toxicity from lead may be another factor. Steven Horne says natural phytoestrogens may be helpful.  He also says antistress vitamin supplement in herbal base can supply essential B-vitamins. Horne says St. John's Wort is an herb that historically has been used for the nervous system.

PMS-H (hyper hydration)
This group is associated with fluid retention. Weight gain, breast tenderness, swelling of extremities, and abdominal bloating are some of the characteristics of this group. According to Steven Horne this is caused by elevated levels of the hormone aldosterone. He also says diuretics may help. Horne also says Vitamin E, GLA, magnesium  and phytoestrogens may be helpful for this type of PMS as well.

Yeast infections may also contribute to PMS. Yeast infections are closely related to general toxicity. Progesterone affects yeast growth which means that women with yeast overgrowth often have more problems with yeast related symptoms during their later half of their cycle. You might want to consider Candida cleansing if you have problems with vaginal yeast infections, taken a lot of antibiotics or birth control pills. The endocrine glands work together, so thyroid problems may also contribute to PMS.

Aromatherapy
Essential oils and aromatherapy treatments may be beneficial in PMS. According to Battaglia, sweet fennel, geranium, and juniper berry used in a lymphatic drainage massage may reduce fluid retention.

Battaglia writes that clary sage, rose, geranium, sweet fennel influence the production of hormones and may be beneficial for  PMS. He says Roman chamomile, rose, and bergamot may be used to reduce irritability and depression. Battaglia also says in order for the essential oils to be beneficial for PMS, the above essential oils need to be used daily in a massage blend with evening primerose oil as the base oil.

Essential Oils and Fertility

Essential Oils and Fertility

Increasing problem
Infertility is an increasing problem. There are a lot of factors involved that can be the cause of infertility. Poor nutrition, toxicity, and xenoestrogens are just a few things that can cause hormonal imbalance. Women pay thousands of dollars for medical treatments and many of them are not successful.

Essential oils may be helpful
Essential oils may be very useful for female concerns. In fact, aromatherapy is one of the most effective methods of dealing with problems of the reproductive system. Many essential oils have historically been used to help regulate hormone production. Some essential oil constituents have hormonal like behavior since their structure is similar to hormones. This means they interact with the receptors that identify hormones.

The powerful aroma
The aroma of an essential oil is very powerful. The fragrance can  directly affect our emotions as well as other functions in the body. Many oils are very useful for reducing stress-related tension. Essential oils may also increase circulation and boost the immune system. The essential oil aroma is inhaled and transferred to the limbic system where the limbic lobe activates the hypothalamus. The hypothalamus acts as the hormonal control center and it releases chemical messengers. The inhalation of essential oils is said to stimulate the production of hormones from the hypothalamus, as well as combating stress and emotional trauma.

The following oils are said to have hormone like actions:
Female infertility
According to Valeri Ann Worwood, these oils help with infertility:
Clary sage, geranium, fennel, cypress, Roman chamomile, thyme, nutmeg, and coriander.

Worwood lists the following oils to help with Male infertility:

Thyme, cumin, sage, clary sage, basil, Cedarwood, vetiver and angelica.
Anise seed oil is also said to have estrogenic activity.
Uterine and ovarian tonics
Uterine tonics have a toning and strengthening effect on the whole system, on the tissue of the organs. Oils that are uterine tonics include jasmine, clary sage, myrrh, frankincense, rose, melissa, and geranium.

Let’s focus on some of the most popular oils used for fertility:
Geranium
Geranium has a balancing effect on the nervous system. It is considered an ideal oil to maintain homeostasis of the body. According to Battaglia, its stimulating effect on the adrenal cortex has a regulatory effect on the hormonal system. As mentioned above, it is also considered an uterine and ovarian tonic.
Clary sage
It balances the hormones. According to Gary Young, clary Sage contains natural phytoestrogen that mimics estrogen function. It is very calming and stress relieving. It is also an uterine and ovarian tonic.
Fennel
Fennel stimulates said to stimulate estrogen production. It has historically been useful in regulating the menstrual cycle.
Cypress
According to Battaglia, it said to stimulate estrogen production and has a regulating effect on the menstrual cycle. It strengthens an overburdened nervous system and restores calm. It’s an astringent and has traditionally been used to reduce abnormally heavy blood loss.
Jasmine
It is a great oil for emotional problems, and it is a known anti-depressant. Battaglia says it is also helpful in childbirth and will assist in labor.  It’s hormonal activity is useful in menstrual problems. It may relieve spasms of the uterus.

The Powerful Aroma of an Essential Oil

The Powerful Aroma of an Essential Oil

The aroma of an essential oil is very powerful. The fragrance can  directly affect our emotions as well as other functions in the body.
In order for an aroma to be detected it has to be volatile so it can be carried by the air to the 10 million sensory neurons located in the nostrils. The aroma finally ends up in the limbic system of the brain where it is perceived and analyzed. The limbic system is the main relay station, and it is there all the emotional responses are located.

The frontal lobes of the limbic system control the memory and attention, and it is also here the emotional responses are sensed. The limbic system is directly connected to the part of the brain that controls breathing, memory, hormone balance, stress levels, blood pressure and heart rate. This means that essential oils can have very profound psychological and physiological effects. Depression, anxiety, anger, joy and and fear originate from this part.

After the information about the scent has been perceived and analyzed of the limbic system, it is sent to other parts of the brain and then to storage in the memory. Interestingly enough the sense of smell is the only one of the five senses that is directly linked to the limbic lobe of the brain. The sense of smell connects emotions with memories as well as intergrate mind and body. The aroma from a special fragrance can evoke emotions and memories before we are aware of it.

The limbic lobe can also activate the hypothalamus, which is considered one of the most important parts of the brain. It acts as the hormonal control center and it releases chemical messengers which can affect things like the energy level. Sex hormones, thyroid hormones, growth hormones, and neurotransmitters are governed by the hypothalamus. The hypothalamus is referred to as the "master gland".

So,through the essential oils' molecular structure and fragrance, they can influence the limbic lobe and hypothalamus. Inhalation of essential oils can combat stress and emotional trauma, and also stimulate production of hormones from the hypothalamus.

As you can see, essential oils have a very powerful influence on both  body and mind.

Hormonal Balance The Natural Way

Hormonal Balance The Natural Way

We are constantly being exposed to news that girls are reaching puberty as young as 7 years old, fertility rates are going down, and breast cancer rates have increased. By the age of 60 one in three women has had a hysterectomy. It's more important than ever to balance your estrogen in order to protect your feminine health.

Ladies, it has not always been like this, and with so many having medical procedures done it may seem like it is supposed to be like this, but it is not.

Something is definitely wrong.

Weston Price toured the world in the 1930s studying various indigenous people, and he discovered that native women eating traditional diets didn't have any reproductive health problems. So, as you can see, these feminine problems are not normal. It is our modern lifestyle, especially the exposure to environmental toxins known as xenoestrogens, that is causing the problem.

Xenoestrogens

The body produces three estrogenic hormones, they are called estrone, estradiol, and estriol. Plants make substances that have estrogenic-like effects and they are called phytoestrogens.

Xenoestrogens are a third type of estrogenic compound. They are environmental pollutants that have estrogen-like actions. They are found in eggs, meat, and dairy products from hormone fed animals. They are also found in pesticide residues on food, plastics, and other sources such as shampoos, cosmetics, and other beauty products. It may not seem so harmful if you are exposed to these chemicals individually, but you have to consider that when a person is exposed to multiple xenoestrogens, then the estrogenic effect is 100 -1000 times stronger than the most potent form of estrogen made in humans.

By overstimulating estrogen sensitive tissues, xenoestrogens cause:
  • abnormal changes in breast and uterine tissues, contributing to the development of breast lumps and uterine fibroids.
  • mood swings
  • menstrual irregularities such as cramps and heavy bleeding
  • thinning of hair
  • hot flashes
  • weight gain
Estrogen itself is not bad, it is just that xenoestrogens overstimulate an estrogen response. Unfortunately, our food and water supplies are laden with xenoestrogens from herbicides, pesticides, and petrochemical residues. Estrogen compounds are fed to chicken and cattle to increase meat, egg, and dairy production.   It is very wise to minimize the exposure to xenoestrogens since they are involved in so many health problems

How to avoid xenoestrogens
  • Animals that are raised organically cannot be given estrogens. I know it can be pricey, but choosing organically grown meat, milk, and eggs reduces your exposure to estrogens.
  • Pesticides are another source of xenoestrogens, so choose organically grown fruit, seeds, nuts and vegetables. Buy what's in season, sometimes locally grown food is grown organically even though it is not certified.
  • Eat foods rich in phytoestrogens. Many natural foods contain phytoestrogens and they bind to the same receptor sites that xenoestrogens do. Xenoestrogens can't attach to the site if they are occupied by a phytoestrogen. Foods that contain phytoestrogens are beans, flax seeds, many whole grains, dark green, leafy vegetables, and flax seeds with lignans. Lignans are a phytoestrogen.
  • Avoid beauty products with parabens. Don't heat food in plastic if you are using a microwave oven.

Detoxify xenoestrogens

The liver is responsible for breaking down excess hormones and environmental toxins. You can help your liver get rid off excess xenoestrogens and other toxins by supporting it with appropriate herbs and supplements. Most herbal and supplement companies carry liver cleansing products. Fiber binds toxins so don't forget to take some when you cleanse your liver.

Cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, cabbage, and cauliflower may also reduce the levels of xenoestrogens due to their compound indole-3-carbynol. You want to go easy on the cruciferous vegetables if you suffer from hypothyroidism.

A balance between progesterone and estrogen is important. Many natural health care practitioners suggest to increase the progesterone to keep the hormones balanced. However, I suggest that you research more before you add progesterone.

Adrenal Health and Essential Oils

Adrenal Health and Essential Oils

I'm continuing to share what I learned from the book,  Inner Tranformations Using Essential Oils by Dr. LeAnn Deardeuff, DC and Dr. David Deardeuff, DC.  As I previously mentioned, Dr.LeAnne says she has also used herbs, but she noticed that even though herbs worked, she got a much quicker response when she started using essential oils instead. Last week I wrote about Thyroid Health and Essential Oils, in that post you'll find some more information about Dr.LeAnn as well.

I posted more detailed information about the adrenal hormones, and how they especially influence the weight in a previous post.

Adrenal glands
The adrenal glands produce a whole bunch of hormones that play a large role in the regulation of body systems. The most known of them is the adrenalin, or epinephrine as the real name is, and it is what gives the body the energy to the "get up and go." It is the "fight or flight" hormone because the adrenals pump out a lot of it in emergency situations to increase the heart rate, and inhibit the activity of the gastrointestinal tract.

Reproductive system
The hormone building blocks for the reproductive system to create the male and female reproductive hormones are produced in the adrenal cortex. It is important to make sure that the adrenals are working sufficiently if someone has hormonal difficulties, since the adrenals also make some reproductive hormones themselves.

Some other hormones
Adrenocorticoid hormones are also produced in the adrenal cortex. These are mineralocorticoids, mostly aldosterone, and glucocorticoids, which the most well known is cortisol. Cortisol is the stress hormone. Cortisol severely depresses the immune system. Aldosterone promotes retention of sodium in the body, which causes retention of water. Without it we would die of dehydration.

Constant cortisol production
Cortisol is constantly being created by the adrenal glands when a person lives a stress-filled life in order to deal with the stress. Unfortunately it is tearing down muscles and bones, and depressing the immune system too. It will wear a person out by depressing the immune system, inhibit the digestive tract, robbing minerals and proteins from other body systems, and preventing the body from renewing itself.

Plenty of nutrients are needed
The adrenals need plenty of minerals and B-vitamins all the time, but during stress it is very important to make sure the adrenals get sufficient amount of nutrients. If the adrenals don't receive these nutrients they may give a spike of hormones creating a feeling of energy that is followed by a crash, or extreme fatigue because they cannot keep up with their job. Vitamin C and high quality protein should also be considered.

Adrenal insufficiency
Person with adrenal insufficiency may feel fine upon wakening in the morning just to suddenly feel extremely tired during their job. Just the thought of work wears them out sometimes. Any stress, physical, mental, emotional, or financial causes the adrenals to either overreact and make the body extremely tense or nervous, or fail to respond and leaving them extremely tired.

Essential oils
The good news is that according to Dr.LeAnn, nutmeg and clove have corticosteroid activity, and they can support the adrenals and help them to heal. Dr.LeAnn also says the clove is best used on the adrenal points on the feet.

She recommends that nutmeg can be "jump-started" and used as needed.
Dr.LeAnn's uses her Jump Start to make big changes quickly (for low adrenal function, stomach flu, or sinus problem):

Take one drop of therapeutic grade essential oil in the cheek every 10 minutes for an hour, then one drop  every waking hour of the day. If you rub the inner cheek lining of the mouth, it doesn't leave such a bitter or tangy taste as it would on the tongue, and it also absorbs more readily.

Adrenal insufficiency usually turns itself around
Dr.LeAnn says that if you take nutmeg essential oil, B-vitamins and minerals religiously, the adrenal insufficiency usually turns itself around. She has treated patients who had been on adrenal glandular for years that never healed, even though their adrenal function improved. Once they started taking nutmeg essential oil by mouth everyday they were able to get off the glandular. They also felt better than they had in years.

This all based on Dr.LeAnn's experience from her practice.  Dr.LeAnn puts extremely  fatigued patients on glandular while feeding the adrenals the proper nutrition so they can have strength and energy needed to do things.

Diabetes
Dr.LeAnn says that sometimes adrenal insufficiency causes diabetes insipidus. It is a salt-handling problem that has similar symptoms as diabetes mellitus. Constant desire to drink liquid that never quenches their thirst is a major symptom of diabetes insipidus. Many times it is enough to increase the trace minerals or potassium. In other cases the problem is that the cells don't absorb water properly so it is stored somewhere in the body, or being eliminated. Dr.LeAnn says geranium essential oil can help with this problem by helping the cells take up water, and she recommends to add a drop of geranium to every glass of water you drink in a day.

Other things to consider
Dr. LeAnn says that sometimes adrenal insufficiency can be related to, or being an underlying factor in hypoglycemia. She has also treated women who have both hypothyroidism and hypoadrenia (adrenal insufficiency), and she often discovers that their estrogen levels are low as well.

Gary Young says in his book, "Essential Oils and Intergrative Medical Guide", that in addition to nutmeg, black pepper is also an essential oil to consider for adrenal insufficiency. He suggests a blend of nutmeg, clove and rosemary mixed with massage oil to be used as a warm compress over the adrenal gland area (on back, over the kidneys).

Dr.LeAnn emphasizes the it all starts with cleansing in order to heal, so keep that in mind.

This information is all based on using therapeutic grade essential oils. Oils not listed as dietary supplements should not be ingested.

Essential Oils Especially For Women

Essential Oils Especially For Women

Essential oils can be very useful for female concerns. In fact, aromatherapy is one of the most effective methods of dealing with pregnancy, menopausal, and menstrual problems.  Many essential oils have been used to help regulate the hormone production and they can relax or uplift. Many oils are also very useful for reducing stress-related tension which may make the symptoms worse.

According to Battaglia, jasmine and rose may be used to relieve specific complaints, such as menstrual problems, since they have a general strengthening effect on the female reproductive system.

Some essential oil constituents have hormonal like behavior since their structure is similar to hormones. This means they interact with the receptors that identify hormones. According to Battaglia, estrogenic activity has been found in oils such as sweet fennel and ansiseed.

According to Salvatore Battaglia, oils with these properties are considered useful in treating conditions associated with the reproductive system:

Antispasmodics
Essential oils such as clary sage, Roman and German chamomile, sweet marjoram, and lavender may be used for conditions like menstrual cramps and labor pains.

Emmenagogues
According to Salvatore Battaglia, essential oils with emmenagogue actions have the ability to promote menstrual discharge, and they have may be used to treat amenorrhea and scanty periods.
Oils with emmenagogue actions are basil, German and Roman chamomile, clary sage, sweet fennel, lavender, juniper berry, sweet marjoram, rose, rosemary, myrrh, and peppermint.

Galactagogues
Galactagogues are used to increase milk flow. Galactagogue essential oils include aniseed, jasmine, sweet fennel, dill, and lemongrass.

Uterine tonics
Uterine tonics have a toning and strengthening effect on the whole system, on the tissue of the organs. Oils that are uterine tonics include jasmine, clary sage, myrrh, frankincense, and rose.

Parturients
Oils with parturient properties help induce labor by stimulating contraction. Essential oils that are parturient are jasmine, nutmeg and rose.

Antimicrobial
Essential oils with antiseptic and antibacterial properties may be used to treat vaginal pruritus and thrush, as well as leucorrhea. Antimicrobial oils include eucalyptus, bergamot, myrrh, German chamomile, rose, sandalwood and tea tree.

My favorites

Geranium
Geranium essential oil has a wonderfully uplifting, calming, flowery scent. Geranium has a balancing effect on the nervous system. It is considered an ideal oil to maintain homeostasis of the body. According to Battaglia, it stimulates the adrenal cortex, which regulates the hormonal system, and therefor geranium is traditionally recommended for where fluctuating hormones are a problem. Battaglia, says it useful in treating PMS and  menopause problems.
According to Battaglia, geranium also dilates bile ducts for liver detoxification.

Clary sage
(Salvia sclarea) essential oil contains natural phytoestrogens. It has a mellow, warm, herbal scent that is uplifting and relaxing, making it a perfect choice for supporting a normal, healthy attitude during PMS. It is also supportive for menopausal women.

Roman chamomile
(Chamaemelum nobile) has a warm, sweet, herbaceous scent that is relaxing and calming for both mind and body. Its gentleness makes it especially valuable for restless children. Soothing to all types of skin, it is used extensively in Europe in skin preparations. Roman chamomile is also beneficial when added to massage oil for relief of muscle discomfort after exercise. Roman chamomile was one of the Saxons' nine sacred herbs.

Jasmine
is a great oil for emotional problems. Jasmine is a great oil for emotional problems, and according to Battaglia it is an anti-depressant. He also says it has historically been helpful in childbirth. Battaglia says if it is massaged in the back and the lower abdomen, it may relieve pain in the lower abdomen and strengthen the contractions.

According to Battaglia, jasmine has historically been used to assist in the expulsion of the placenta. Its hormonal activity is useful in menstrual problems. According to Battaglia, jasmine has traditionally been a good oil for for the skin and may help in conditions such as eczema, dermatitis, and dry aggravated skin.
