Three Oils for the Home

Lemon, lavender, and grapefruit are three wonderful oils that are very useful around the house. These are oils that can be used for skin care, healing, and cleaning around the house. Lavender is part of my first aid kit and I keep it near me so I can easily grab it in an emergency. Lemon is one of the essential oils that I like to use when I clean. I add a few drops of grapefruit and lemon to my shower gel to wake me up in the mornings.

Here is a little more information about the oils:
Lavender:
Lavender is an excellent oil to keep in your first aid kit. It is a very versatile oil and gentle enough to use neat, or undiluted in children. According to Battaglia,  it is antiseptic and is  helpful in flu, wounds, catarrh, cystitis, colds and coughs. Battaglia also says lavender is  a great choice when experiencing pain. It is also a sedative nervine and it alleviates stress and can also be useful in fearful situations. According to Battaglia, its antispasmodic, analgesic, relaxant actions may provide relief in muscular pain and rheumatism.

According to Battaglia, lavender has become the most useful oil when treating burns and it is even used in European hospitals. He says it has excellent healing properties on the skin and that its analgesic and antiseptic properties will ease the pain and prevent infection of the burn. He also says its cytophylactic properties will promote healing without scarring.

Lemon:
According to Battaglia, lemon is highly antibacterial and it is able to stimulate the action of the white blood cells. It is refreshing and uplifting, and research in Japan has proven its effect to improve the ability to concentrate. According to Battaglia, lemon has  astringent properties and can be used as a cleansing agent on greasy skin, and due its antiseptic properties make it useful to treat boils and cuts.

Grapefruit:
Grapefruit is very uplifting and refreshing. According to Battaglia, it is an energizing and reviving aroma which makes grapefruit valuable for stress, nervous exhaustion, and depression. According to Battaglia, its diuretic and detoxifying properties have made it helpful in treating cellulites. Battaglia says it is helpful in treating acne and oily skin. Grapefruit is also used in cosmetics, detergents, alcoholic beverages, and in soap.

Before you leave:

I recommend that you always perform a skin patch test when you try a new oil.
