Bergamot, Citrus Aurantium var.bergamia
The two major actions of bergamot, citrus aurantium var.bergamia are nervine and antiseptic actions. Bergamot is often used in psychological and emotional problems, since it is considered to be one of the most suitable oils for those conditions. It also has an affinity with the urinary system.
Nervines
Acccording to Battaglia, bergamot has relaxant nervine actions.
Nervines can be either sedative or stimulants, and they tone and give strength to the nervous system. Relaxant nervines do not only relax the body mentally, but they also relax the visceral neuromuscular function of the whole body. As a relaxant, bergamot may be useful in psychological problems such as anxiety, nervous tension, insomnia and fear. Its sedative actions along with the uplifting properties may reduce the side effects of tension and stress when used in massage or in a bath. The main constituent responsible for bergamot's relaxant nervine action is the ester linalyl acetate.
Antiseptics
According to Battaglia, bergamot has antiseptic properties.
Antiseptics prevent the reproduction and growth of microorganisms. Battaglia says bergamot's antiseptic actions are useful for the urinary tract. Bergamot is said to be one of the most effective oils for cystitis. Battaglia says to add three drops to a bath and use it as a local wash.
The alcohol linalool and the monoterpene limonene give bergamot its antiseptic and antimicrobial actions.
Citrus aurantium var.bergamia is a versatile oil and its psychological actions make the physiological properties more powerful. Bergamot is uplifting and relaxant, which are wonderful qualities needed when the antiseptic properties are used in difficult conditions.
Caution
Bergamot is photosensitive, so it is advisable to avoid exposure to the sun at least 12 hours after application. A skin patch test is recommended.
